In this file you define the layout of the MSDS (Master Data Safety Sheet). The MSDS itself, i.e. the unique data for a particular MSDS, is defined in the MSDS file which is accessed via the Work with material safety data sheets menu item.
A Material Safety Data Sheet provides both customers, workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with hazardous substances. Items that are connected to an MSDS (in the Item file) are considered as hazardous products.
The MSDS has to printed and sent to the customer the first time the customer buys the item. If anything is changed in the MSDS (or MSDS definition), a new MSDS has to be sent to all customers who have bought the item.
Three other documents are involved in the handling of hazardous substances:
TREM card
The TREM card (TRansport EMergency card) contains instructions for the measures to take in an emergency situation and should follow the transport of the goods every time the item is shipped to a customer. This is a mandatory document.
Label
Labels can be used to label the goods shipped.
Freight document
Every time an MSDS item is shipped, a summarised printout of the MSDS document can be created, and printed, automatically. The MSDS information is not printed on the actual freight document, rather an additional document is produced.
The MSDS definition file is organised in Sections, Sub-sections, Table fields and Text pages, in the following way:
- Sections which contain
- sub-sections which contain
- table fields and/or
- text pages
- sub-sections which contain
For example:

- Sub-section 1: Substance identification
- Section 2: Composition and Information on ingredients

Work with MSDS definitions, MSDS section maintenance (DIR71504)
This panel displays the detailed information for the MSDS section you selected on the previous panel. The panel is also displayed if you are creating a new MSDS section.
Function keys
- MSDS section
- Sequence
- Enter a unique sequence number, indicating the order in which the MSDS sections should be displayed on the initial panel in this file. The sequence number also controls the order in which the MSDS sections are printed on the MSDS, TREM cards, labels and freight documents. Note: It is possible to print the sections on an MSDS in any order when using the Print environment database program.
- Print section
- Indicate if this section should be printed on MSDS, TREM cards and freight documents. If this field is set to NO, neither table field data and text defined for the sub-sections included in this section, nor the section heading, will be printed.
- Section heading
- Enter the text to be printed as the heading for this section on the MSDS.
