In this panel, you maintain the values for the characteristic. The value must fulfil the data attributes defined at characteristic header level. Attributes such as data type (alphanumeric or numeric), length and the number of decimals (when numeric) is taken into account. These attributes, along with the descriptions defined, will give the value its own identity.
A default value for the characteristic can also be defined in the Work with characteristic profiles file, after you attach the characteristic to the applicable profile. This allows you to save time by assigning, in advance, some values for characteristics you know will always be the same for all items. When you go through the process of applying the item classification definition to generate the item in the Item file, one of the steps is to choose the value for the characteristics that are displayed for the selected grouping structure. If a default value has been defined for the characteristic for the applicable profile, it will automatically be loaded. Alternatively, you can prompt a selection window and select the applicable value for the characteristic (one of the values entered in this panel).

- Characteristic

In other words, when characteristics values are result of a range of values defined at characteristic header level. Translation can only be applied at header level for the fixed description.
- Long description
- Enter the extended descriptive text for the corresponding characteristic value. This field is protected if the Fixed description field on header level is defined. In other words, when characteristic’s values are the result of a range of values defined at characteristic header level. Translation can only be applied at header level for the fixed description.
Note: This field is mainly used as the main description when maintaining characteristic values, however, it can also be used as a value when defining layout definitions.
