On this panel you can test the layout definition in simulation mode to check what the end result would be when the layout definition is applied during item creation. Note: Only those characteristics used by the layout definition are displayed in this panel. However, when you create your item (i.e. when you apply the Item classification definition) all characteristics attached to your grouping structure will be listed along with the ones used by the layout definition.
Note: When this panel is accessed via the Rebuild item description routine, the item will always be defaulted to the applicable item code and no characteristics will be loaded to allow free-entry of values. If you wish to use that preview method, click Reset values. The panel will be presented as standard, i.e. Item field = blank and any characteristic used within the layout definition will be listed to allow free-entry of values.
Any default value for a characteristic within the grouping structure are loaded.
You can choose to do the following:
- Manually enter/change the applicable values for the characteristics used by the layout definition. This is typically done the first time you create a layout and you don’t have any created items upon which the layout definition will be applied.
- Once you have created items (for the same grouping structure) and many characteristics are involved in the layout definition you may want to choose this alternative. Enter the existing item itself. This will load the characteristics and values attached to that existing item to build-up the preview of the layout rather than entering value per value manually.
After entering the applicable item and/or values and clicking OK, you will see what the result would be IF you were to enter those values during item creation (i.e. when applying the Item classification definition to create the item).
Function keys
Reset values | Revert values back to original state. For example, if the original state of two values when you first accessed this preview mode was blank for the first value and default value for the second value and you changed both to test, both values will be reset back to blank and original default value when you click this function key. |
- Layout
- Displays the selected layout code for the layout definition.
- Item
- This field is typically used once you have created items (for the same grouping structure) and many characteristics are involved in the layout definition. Enter the existing item itself. This will load the characteristics and values attached to that existing item to build-up the preview of the layout rather than entering value per value manually. Note: Any characteristic with a defined Item field override is not allowed to be used. Click OK to view the end result.
- Characteristics
- Lists the description of the characteristic code that is connected to the definition element(s) in the layout definition. Note: In this preview panel only those characteristics used by the layout definition are displayed. However, when you create your item (i.e. when you apply the Item classification definition) all characteristics attached to your grouping structure will be listed along with the ones used by the layout definition.

This panel displays the end result of the layout definition, i.e. IF you were to enter those values during item creation (i.e. when applying the Item classification definition to create the item).
- Layout
- Displays the selected layout code for the layout definition.
- Layout definition
- Displays the layout definition string.
- Language
- Displays the language of the end result. Note: In regards to the Foreign and Extended item descriptions, if any definition element within the layout (e.g., the description of a characteristic value) has been translated, the translated value will be used when generating the Foreign and Extended item description in the applicable language.
