This document outlines some basic situations, important for the understanding of the time axis function. Simply, how the sales order quantity and purchase order quantity affect the available quantity, depending on where they appear. The different situations are as follows:
A situation where:
- today’s date is 26/05/12
- a sales order quantity within the planning time affects the available quantity between today and the reservation date. (See cell 30/05/12 with qty 35).
- a purchase order covers, both in its entirety and more, a sales order quantity on a subsequent date (cell), and the available quantity before the purchase order cell is not affected by the sales order quantity. Both dates are within the planning time. (See cells 01/06/12 with qty 50, and cell 02/06/12 with qty 10).
- a sales order quantity is outside the planning time and consequently does not affect the available quantity within the planning time. (See cell 06/06/12 – 10/06/12 with qty 31).
- purchase order is outside the planning time. (See cell 27/06/12 – 01/07/12 with qty 50).
Calculate Net On hand
The Net “On hand” is calculated as follows:
On hand | 105 |
– Picking | 10 |
– Returns | 5 |
= Net “On hand” | 90 |
Note: This Net “On hand” quantity is never visible on the Time axis enquiry, but is shown in the table examples below to help you understand how the system calculates the available quantity per day.
The following three tables describe what is happening in each cell block on the panel:

Calculated NRBB
The “Net Requirement Brought Backwards” (NRBB) in all three cell blocks is calculated as follows:
Note: The formula for calculating NRBB is: NRBB – PO + SO, where PO includes purchase order (mother)/manual order and SO includes sales order (components)/manual reservation
- The NRBB in cell 01/06/12 is calculated to 10 as cell 02/06/12 contains a sales quantity of 10 (NRBB = 0 – 0 + 10 = +10)
- The NRBB for cell 31/05/12 is set to zero as the NRBB calculation in cell 01/06/12 results in -40. (NRBB = +10 – 50 + 0 = -40)
- The NRBB for cell 27/05/12 is calculated to +35 as cell 30/05/12 contains a sales quantity of 35 (NRBB = 0 – 0 + 35 = +35).
Calculate available quantity
With these figures as a base, the available quantity can now be calculated for each cell using the following formula:
On hand – Picking/kitting – Returns to supplier – Held quantity (for batch-controlled items) – Sum of all sales orders components/manual reservations from previous cells – Sum of all sales orders components/manual reservations in the current cell – Sum of any Net Requirement Brought Back from subsequent cells within the planning time (NRBB) + Sum of all purchase orders (mother)/manual orders to be dispatched today or earlier = Available |
Example:
The available quantity for cell 02/06/12 is:
90 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 35 – 10 – 0 + 50 = 95 |
