This panel holds the following segmentation types:
- those that are used to define the rules and control the segmentation of the item when an item is added to, or changed, in the Item file.
- those that are used in the item matrix functionality.
For flexibility purposes, the segmentation methods available include the following:
- Segmentation by delimiter
- Segmentation by length
This table can also be used to indicate that a validation is to be performed at item entry, checking that the item is entered according to a pre-defined structure, using values in the Item segment value table.
When the segmentation characteristics for an entry in this table are changed, the Item file is updated with the new item segment values.

Work with item segmentation types (DMR09404)
On this panel you define the details of the segmentation types.
Function keys
- Segmentation type
Segmentation
In the fields below you define the method and technique that will be used for actual segmentation of the item code in the Item file.
- Number of segments
- Enter 0 if the Segmentation by length method is to be used. In this case the number of segments used are controlled by how many of the Segment lengths fields that hold values. Enter 1 to 6 if the Segmentation by delimiter method is to be used.
- Delimiters
- If the Segmentation by delimiter method is being used for this Segmentation type, (i.e. the Number of segments field contains the value 1-6), enter all the characters that can be used to divide the item into segments. Note: You cannot enter the character that is used as the Search delimiter (which is defined in the DIS control file).
Item matrix functionality
Enter all the characters that can be used to divide the item into segments. Note: You cannot enter the character that is used as the Search delimiter (which is defined in the DIS control file). This field can work independently from the Blank as delimiter field or in conjunction with it. It is possible to combine different delimiters and blank as delimiter in the same item code. The delimiters stated (including the Blank as delimiter) are those that are allowed to be used as ‘Common delimiters’ when you create the item. Note: The Common delimiter field in the Item file maintenance, Build item code from segments file is preloaded with the delimiter from this segmentation type if there is only one delimiter.Examples:
- If you only enter one delimiter, (for example, an asterisk ‘*’) that one will be defaulted to the Common delimiter field when you create the matrix base item.
- If you enter more than one character, (for example, an asterisk and a forward slash (*/)), nothing will be defaulted to the Common delimiter field when you create the matrix base item. It will be empty. During the process of creating the matrix base item, you will have to enter ‘*’ or ‘/’, or, if the Blank as delimiter field in this table is set to YES, leave the Common delimiter field empty in which case the item will be created with blanks between the segments. If the Blank as delimiter field is set to NO, you will be have to enter the ‘*’ or ‘/’ character in the Common delimiter field, or enter the applicable character for each segment when you create the matrix base item.
- Blank as delimiter
- If the Segmentation by delimiter method is being used for this Segmentation type (i.e. the Number of segments field contains the value 1-6), indicate if blank is to be used as delimiter. For the item matrix functionality, set this field to YES if you want to be able to insert a blank space between segments (i.e. divide the item into segments using a blank space).
- Segment lengths
- When the Segmentation by length method is to be used (i.e. the Number of segments is set to 0) enter the number in any or all of the six fields to indicate the valid length of each segment. Note: The number can be between 0 and 35, but the total length of all segments must not exceed 35.
- Segment 1-6 desc
- Enter a description of each segment. For segmentation types used in the Item matrix functionality, the Segment 1-3 desc fields must be completed. When you go through the process of building (creating) the matrix base item code, the entry in the Segment 1 desc field will be the field label for the first segment; the entry in the Segment 2 desc field will be the field label for the second segment; the entry in the Segment 3 desc field will be the field label for the third segment.
- Primary segment
- Enter a number 1 to 6 that identifies the segment to be searched in the Select item routine, when no search delimiters have been entered. For segmentation types used in the Item matrix functionality, this field must be set to 1.
Validations
In the fields below you can enter specific validations for the segments you defined. For the item matrix functionality, validating the segments is optional since Segment 2 and 3 will always be validated against the Matrix template table. IF you choose to validate the segments, the set up of item segment values for the validation process can be done before or after you create the item matrix templates. Optionally, set the applicable field to YES for the segment you want to validate.
- Segment
- Indicate in the six fields if the corresponding segment is to be validated against the records in the Item segment value table. This gives you the possibility to validate whether an item code is being entered according to a pre-defined syntax.
For example:
You want segments 1 and 2 to contain certain values, but segments 3-6 can contain any value. In this case you would set segments 1 and 2 to YES and segments 3 through 6 to NO. Within the Item segment value table you would enter, for each segment you want validated, the segment number and the valid value that the segment must contain for this Segmentation type.
- Compress item code
- This field is only valid if the Segmentation by delimiter method is being used. Indicate if the item code should be stored in a compressed format (i.e. without delimiters). If this field is set to YES, the item code is added to and stored as an item alias in the Item cross reference file, with all delimiters removed from the original item code. This compressed format can be used for quicker entry of the item code without any delimiters.
For example:
If the Item code with delimiters is MFGX/123456 BB*99, the stored compressed item code would be MFGX123456BB*99.

- Enter any text to further describe the segmentation type.

Confirm re-segmentation (DMR09414)
On this panel you confirm any changes made to the item segmentation type. The changes will lead to re-segmentation of the Item file. Items that do not comply with the new requirements will be printed on a list. Once you click OK, the re-segmentation will be done interactively and could take some time to complete.
