The purpose of this routine is to allow you to identify all item/warehouse combinations that show a trend pattern in demand. By identifying these items you can more accurately forecast demand. The information from a trend analysis is used when a forecast is calculated for an item.

Prerequisites
In order for an item to be considered during a trend analysis the following must be met:

  • The warehouse must be activated for the item in the Item/Inventory management file.
  • A demand must exist for the item/warehouse combination in Work with forecasts for all historical periods you want to analyze.

The resulting item(s) that will be included in the analysis depends on the selections you make coupled with the parameters you define for the trend definition in this routine.

The Trend code field in the Item/Inventory management file dictates whether or not you want to use the results from the trend analysis to forecast demand for the item/warehouse combination. This field can be updated with YES or NO via three routines. See Identify and adjust demand trends for more information.

On this panel, you define the parameters to be used for the trend definition in this selection.

Trend definition

Number of periods
Mandatory entry. Enter the number of historical periods that you want to include in this analysis. The system starts with the most recent historical period and counts back until includes the number of periods that you requested. You can go as far back as one year. This does not include the present period. See the example in the Change percentage field below.
Incr/decr in periods
Mandatory entry.Enter the number of periods for which there must be an increase or decrease in demand in order for items in this selection to be considered trend items. See the example in the Change percentage field below.
Change percentage
Mandatory entry. The system needs to know how much higher or lower the demand must be in order for the items in this selection to be considered trend items. Enter the percentage deviation.

Example:

Enter 10 in the Number of periods field above, and 4 in the Incr/decr in periods field, and 5 in this field. Based on these parameters, the system will include items in this selection that show a 5% increase or decrease in demand (as compared to the preceding forecast period) in four of the last ten periods.

Update trend code
Set to YES if you want to update the trend code in the Item/Inventory management for all item/warehouse combinations that show a trend pattern. Note: This field must be NO if Update in work file is YES.
Update in work file
Indicate if you want to update the created report in a work file in order to analyse the result before the trend code is updated in the Item/Inventory management. If you set this field to YES, then you are able to modify the trend values in the analysis in Work with trend codes before updating. Note: This field must be NO, if Update trend code is YES.
Trend analysis ID
Enter a code to identify the trend analysis report that you are creating.
ID description
Enter a description of the trend analysis ID.
