The most common way of bank payments in Norway is via file transfer using the telepay format which is maintained by BBS (Bankenes Betalingssentral). This calls for an agreement between BBS and the bank. The payments are categorized as either domestic payments or foreign payments (cross border). When it concerns foreign payments, the customer has to inform the bank about the purpose of the payment. The bank in turn informs the legal authorities about the payment using information in the transaction file.
